Blum & Poe is pleased to present I wasn’t joking. You were joking. I was serious., a solo-exhibition of new works by artist Julian Hoeber.
In this exhibition, Hoeber will premiere his feature-length film, Talkers are No Good Doers. Shot with a DV cam and a remarkably small budget, it is a traditional three-act narrative inspired by the works of writer Theodore Dreiser and directors John Cassavettes and Claude Chabrol as well as the artist’s own questions of interaction, connection and disconnection amongst his peers. Using the premise of political activism as the framework, the film follows Skip and his friends, a group of disaffected Los Angelenos, who on the verge of coming undone, find themselves driven by a self-absorption that leads them to destruction.
Also included in the exhibition are over 50 photographs, drawings and various ephemera that are both primary and supplemental to the film. Shot or conceived during the filming of Talkers are No Good Doers, these works contain a network of images and ideas that intersect with the film's narrative and the filmmaking process.
Prior to earning his MFA from Art Center College of Design, Julian Hoeber attended the Karel deGrote Hogeschool in Belgium and received degrees from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and Tufts University. He lives and works in Los Angeles, California. This exhibition marks his second solo-show at Blum & Poe.
Continuous screenings of Talkers are No Good Doers will take place during gallery hours at 11:00am, 2:00pm and 4:00pm daily and evening screenings will take place at 7:00pm on Thursdays for the duration of the exhibition.
Blum & Poe is located at 2754 S. La Cienega Blvd. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 AM to 6:00 PM. For further information please contact Claudine Auguste or Alexandra Gaty at 310 836 2062.
