May 23 – June 29, 2002
Santa Monica

Opening Screenings to be held the evening of May 23rd at Paramount Pictures. Please call the gallery for further information.

Blum & Poe is pleased to annouced the first solo exhibition of work by Julian Hoeber. The exhibition will be comprised of screenings of Hoeber's "moving picture" Killing Friends, as well as production stills, sculpture and a film poster all of which explore the complex relationship between performance, film, representation, violence, and repetition.

Taking cues from the early video performance works of Bruce Nauman and Marina Abramovic and exploitation gore films, Hoeber designed a video in which the devices of such performance video (static camera, long takes, stress on the body) could be reintegrated into a narrative form.  As Hoeber states: "Although some of these devices were already present in exploitation films, I wanted to highlight these moments and strip away the camp elements and pop psychology, which often fill such films. In this way I felt I could reintegrate this strand of video art history into contemporary video practices and examine the relationship between video art and the video medium's cinematic capabilities."

Prior to earning his MFA from Art Center College of Design, Julian Hoeber received degrees from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston,Tufts University and Karel deGrote Hogeschool in Belgium. Julian Hoeber lives and works in Los Angeles, California.

Killing Friends will be screened at Paramount Studios on May 23. Show times are 7:00, 7:45, and 8:30 pm. Seating is limited. Please RSVP to Blum & Poe.
