Mark Grotjahn

November 12 – December 19, 1998
Santa Monica

Opening reception: Thursday, November 12, 6–8pm

Blum & Poe is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by Los Angeles based artist Mark Grotjahn, November 12 through December 19.

Grotjahn will present perspectival paintings, line drawings and examples of an ongoing sign exchange project. Grotjahn's highly personalized work abuts the everyday up against and filters it through the formal conventions of pop art, conceptualism, performance and pure mark making.

While the perspective paintings formally confront idealized space and the line drawings highlight a more interior fantasy, the sign exchange project articulates a more performative engagement with the everyday through verbal and physical exchanges with the people who make and use signs to articulate an object in the space of the commodity. This engagement is the foundation through which all of the work is laced.
