Conceived and organized by a collective of twenty Los Angeles publishers, book sellers, and editors, ACID-FREE presents a three-day book market focused on independent art publishing on the West Coast.
The 80+ exhibitors will sell publications ranging from books of critical writing to photo and artists' books, and will be positioned alongside lectures, readings, book signings, and film programming. Curators Zanna Gilbert (Getty Research Institute) and John Tain (Asia Art Archive) will speak about the history of artists' use of xerography; SFMOMA Librarian David Senior will give a talk on the connections between publishing and performance art; Rakish Light will co-present a reading by painter Gailyn Saroyan & poet Aram Saroyan; and featuring a performance by Mutant Salon; poetry readings hosted by Marcel Alcalá, curator of McPoems, and Tracy Jeanne Rosenthal, editor of Art Los Angeles Reader; a conversation on queer publishing practices as pedagogy by Art Metropole and the Queer Publishing Project; and much more.
Other programming includes video work curated by Colpa Press, DIS, Veggie Cloud, Los Angeles Contemporary Archive, Memory, Solano Archives, and the Echo Park Film Center, with clips from Leilah Weinraub's Shakedown and John Story's The Depoliticization of Black Cinema, and work by Darren Bader, Casey Jane Ellison, Jibade-Khalil Huffman, Alima Lee, and many more. An exhibition of vintage marijuana growers guides curated by Family Books in collaboration with the Family Acid, and Fluxus archival ephemera curated by Art Catalogues at LACMA will be on view; with music throughout the day selected by Maxwell Sterling, Nite Jewel, Allison Wolfe, and others. Food by Salad for President, Tropics, Earth Pizza, and Shreebs Coffee, and more.
