Opening August 8 through September 7, Blum & Poe will present new work by Los Angeles based painter James Fish.
Using the notion of the false California experience based on hopeful escapism as a starting point, James Fish's new paintings can be interpreted within a great Los Angeles artistic tradition (from John Fante's literary genius through Roman Polanski's Chinatown to Ed Ruscha) of appearing both comfortable and paranoid. With a technique that begins on the computer screen and ends as paintings of windows on vinyl, these very direct and seemingly simple works belie a layered sophistication.
