Blum & Poe is pleased to present Color Pictures, an exhibition of new photographs by artist Sam Durant.
The exhibition will consist of a series of color photographs that address the artist's ongoing relationship with issues of race in American history, as well as political resistance and protest. Using the lyrics of Billie Holiday's song "Strange Fruit" as a springboard, these socio-political themes are combined with imagery and text culled from a variety of sources. Diverse references such as revolutionary slogans by Black Panther Party Minister of Culture Emory Douglas, sculptures by artist Robert Smithson, "multicultural" advertising conventions, and a wealth of other socially potent issues are brought together in a provocative web of interconnections.
Color Pictures at Blum & Poe will also coincide with Sam Durant's mid-career retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. The show is organized by Michael Darling, and will be on display at 250 S. Grand Avenue from October 13, 2002 to January 19, 2003.
