Shane Hassett

September 4 – October 3, 1998
Santa Monica

Opening reception: Friday, September 4, 6–8pm

Blum & Poe is pleased to present Shane Hassett's second one-person exhibition from September 4 through October 3, 1998.

Comprised of two paintings, a video projection and a short 16mm film, Hassett will present a study into the ruins of Los Angeles through use of perspective, scale and an unmasking of architectural language. The exhibition will be augmented with notational drawings and photographs which informed the project.

The ruins project is an attempt to clarify architectural signs through these media. The ruin drawings and paintings focus on extraneous information, specifically the quote of a rubble wall, in order to question the use of such a quote. The video establishes a vacant modernist building only to usurp the picture plane, while the film situates and eventually establishes the viewer inside a ruin. If we are to rely on architecture to establish an identity then what are we to gain once the model is clarified?
